  1. Professor Maria's a very interested person to take a class from, and I'm purposefully saying 'person' instead of 'professor'. She makes a point to get to know each student she meets and honestly attempts to dedicate as much as her attention as she can to that individual. At times it can feel like one is doing what they may have always dreamed to do in college, form a strong bond with their professor. This may be something a student is accustomed to doing with their high school teachers as well. In these aspects, Maria is a wonderfully ideal first year seminar professor with her unique and refreshing outlook on teaching. However, it is important to remember that she does make a point to treat every student equally so she does at times overwork herself. In a way, her attempt to spread as much love as she can is her shortcoming, as she tries what may be the impossible. Nevertheless, her attempt is noble and wins the hearts of many of her students, as well as mine. The only true complaint I have about this class is that it did not feel rigorous in it's writing aspect. The concepts we worked with were fascinating and definitely contributed to my development as an individual, however my writing skills did not feel honed in the slightest. What was important was finding the truest words for how one feels. This is important, especially in a scholarly sense. However, what professor Maria is looking for will not help you with most other professors, who just want to see how well you can answer and structure and essay around a certain prompt. Thus, in a sense, the literary purpose of the first year seminar is lost. This aside, the class was thoroughly enjoyable and interesting, the texts will stay in my library, and you build relationships with a professor and other students that are rare in most other classes.

  3. Maria was definitely the best freshman adviser. The journey taken in this class was not only fascinating on an educational level but inspired each and everyone in the class some how. All students in this seminar enjoyed greatly Maria's presence.
  4. Maria is an extremely kind, helpful, and sincere person, and she is a good professor. As a first-year seminar professor--and therefore, a first-year advisor--she's great because she generally cares about her students' intellectual and personal growth and well-being. This class focuses primarily on Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, and some Jewish mysticism. There is some philosophy (Socrates and Marcus Aurelius). Like any FYSE, it's writing intensive. Her grading is not too intense. She's very maternal, in the sense that she relies primarily on encouragement and genuine concern for students, and she relies occasionally on mild guilt trips. Overall, it was a very good course for anyone interested in spirituality. If you want to take a class with a professor who's approachable and interested in you as a person, take a class with Maria. Finally, I should mention that Maria tends to talk a lot in class discussions, especially if she feels that the students are not participating enough. Toward the end of the semester, I started realizing that she'd rather have students sort of interrupt than sit silently and wait for her to finish talking. Great class.
