Evaluation Comments for Hector Vila

  1. I think Vila's class and Vila himself are either love or hate. The material is quite an interesting but scattered examination of the immigrant's experience of American culture. It is interesting enough, but I felt he taught it poorly. The class often feels like he is just extolling his own philosophy. The first two essays were reflective which many students were glad to hear, while others not so much. The following two were more analytical, which some students preferred while others did not. You essentially wrote about whatever (or nothing) you liked. He has some very interesting ideas and he is quite a character. His grading is fair and he is pretty lax about deadlines. I would NOT recommend this class.

  7. the course is really no course, you never know what the essays are about, so you are basically writing about nothing, you learn nothing about writing, and then you get a low grade
  8. Hector is a character... Grading is fair
  9. I don't think I've ever met a Professor who's more energetic, knowledgeable, funny and sarcastic. There's no way you can hate this class with all of that! If you are rather worried about the whole transition to American Culture, this would be the perfect start. Prof. Vila makes the class very interesting and he encourages you for your best abilities. He won't give you the answer served on a plate. Instead, he shows you how to shop for it, chop it, cook it, and present it in a gourmet way, all by yourself. At the end you?re astonished that you actually had the answer to start with. He goes out of his way to help you with whatever. There are only a few readings. There are online discussions which are quite interesting. When it comes to deadlines he?s very flexible. I loved this class ? it was my favorite class that semester.
