Evaluation Comments for Davis J

  1. This was the best class I have ever taken at Middlebury, and one that will stick with me long after I graduate. I took the class somewhat randomly-- not particularly drawn in by the topic-- but was instantly captivated by Professor Davis. Davis is a great facilitator of discussion. He let's the conversation play out, interjecting only to push students to think more critically about the points they are making or to nudge the conversation in the right direction. He will consistently play devil's advocate to whatever you argue, never betraying his own opinion. Davis is equal parts brilliant and humble. He took a seemingly niche topic-- Christian Just War Theory-- and made it both fascinating and accessible. The workload can be hefty, but almost never gratuitous. He is not interested in working students for the sake of it, but rather assigns the reading necessary for a good discussion. Whether it be this seminar or one of his other classes, I strongly suggest everyone take a class with Professor Davis before graduating Middlebury.

  3. Tons of reading, definitely not an easy class, but my favorite this semester. Davis is great at leading discussions, which were almost always interesting and informative. The readings were long and difficult, and less would be better, but they were generally really interesting.
