Evaluation Comments for Sheldon, S

  1. I was worried about this class when I took it because of all the negative things I had heard, but none of these things seemed to be true at all. Sallie Sheldon is very approachable, maybe a bit scatter-brained at times but she is good a what she teaches. Statistics can be a dry subject, but Sallie's genuine interest and enthusiasm make this class fun. The work is completely manageable (most of it can be done in class) which is nice for J-term. The final exam definitely takes a solid effort, but she gives you an entire week to work on it and she is extremely helpful if you go to her with questions. As long as you know what you are doing on the final exam and ask for help when you need it, then your grade will turn out fine. I highly recommend this class!

  4. I was intimidated by a course on statistics, but because we collected the data it made it more fun. The course is good for JTerm so we could just concentrate on this course. The stats package SPSS takes some getting used to.
  5. Professor Sheldon is great! She was so extremely helpful and so patient. Sometimes, you feel like you're bothering the professor, but she never made you feel that way. Her instructions were clear and she had these really great worksheets that really helped you make sense of SPSS. I highly recommend this class. It's amazing how the information that I learned from this class is helping me out so much in my other classes. As you get into the advanced level classes, you'll have to read a lot of journal articles and this class will help you make sense of the experiments and the statistical tests conducted.
  6. Do everything you can to take this class with Andi Lloyd. Sheldon deliberately curved down the entire classes grades when she realized that almost everyone had gotten A's. She stated in an email after grades went out that she refused to discuss our grades with us and that we shouldn't complain about a B- or C in her class. Her email ended with "I don't believe in grade inflation, so I've accounted for that". Completely arbitrary, unfair, and an extremely inaccurate reflection of my abilities.
  7. Sallie isn't a bad professor, but she's an extremely unfair grader. Students will lose 1-2 points over the course of J-term and somehow wind up with B's or C's. This is because Sallie grades the final at a standard much higher than of that she does for other assignments. Beware, she'll pretty much just give you whatever grade she wants. As for the material, it's really more of a stats primer class. You won't do much work, you won't learn much, and you sure as hell won't think your grade is fair.
  8. Sallie is definitely a cool person. Listening to her talk about her research is really entertaining. The class itself isn't really that bad. It's mainly using statistical programs, so it can't be too exciting, but Sallie really trys to make it more enjoyable. Be warned that you won't really be told how you're being evaluated in the class, and a B- is doing really well. Overall, great personality, ok material, expect a GPA crushing grade.
  9. This class is wonderful and Sallie is great! I know a lot of people complain that she's too tough of a grader and that she's a super scatterbrained lecturer, but honestly I found this to be totally untrue. Her teaching style is definitely very different from anyone else I've ever met, but it's really fun once you get the hang of it. The workload is really really manageable as well--maybe an hour or 2 a day which is really nothing considering it's your only class! I recommend going to talk to her in her office one on one--she's much easier to understand that way for some reason. Also, she loves to talk to anybody about just about anything in biology. Get to know her a bit. She's a wonderful person and a great professor.
  10. Sheldon is a little bit crazy, but this class with her was excellent. You will be confused probably multiple times during this class, but our TA was amazing and helped us work through it. Sheldon is also very nice when you go in to talk to her. Don't be intimidated from taking this class. Running your own experiments is the best way to learn data analysis.
  11. The class itself is interesting and valuable- Sallie is a good teacher. But honestly, it is impossible to predict a grade in this class. Be prepared for a blow to your GPA...
  12. Sallie is a really nice, fascinating person, and she did a pretty good job explaining the material. It's just a basic stats program. Her grading, however, is completely unfair and she literally curves grades down, so that most people get low Bs and Cs when they actually did much better on assignments. If you don't care at all about your GPA, takes this class. If you care at all about your grades, avoid it.
  13. This was the easiest course I have ever taken at Middlebury, but was also my worst grade. It made for a really pleasant Jterm - class often got out early, labs were creative and enjoyable, class was friendly and collaborative, etc. But the grade just killed me. Maybe Sheldon doesn't believe in grade inflation - but med schools do. There was really no way to work harder in this course, I can't think of anything I would have done differently. If you are premed, try to take statistics in the psych or math departments, because your GPA will suffer.
