Evaluation Comments for Winkler, P.

  1. This was an excellent course. Winkler is awesome-- everyone should take a class with him just to have the experience. 165 adds a little bit of a challenge, but if you want to do it, Winkler will help you through it.
  2. This class is amazing. If you're an astronomy buff or just curious about the night sky/stars, take this class. It wasn't a heavy/upper-level physics based class, which was really helpful because last time I took physics was high school senior year. The beginning was a bit dry, because you learn about concepts of light and microscopes and stuff. The last 1/3 of the semester was the best; that's when we learned about the sun, stars, and universe as a whole. Super fascinating stuff, especially since Midd is a place with lots of visible stars at night. The labs we were very fun; they were categorized into Observing labs (which you do by yourself on your own time) and Indoor Labs (which you do on lab nights). Both were equally fun and informative and a great way to learn concepts/theories discussed in class, firsthand. Additionally, some labs required using the telescopes on BiHall roof - awesome for using legit telescopes and figuring out how they work, but also, it's just a great view of campus/the night sky. Winkler is so knowledgeable about this topic, but he doesn't try to intimidate you. He's super friendly, approachable, and available if you need help. It was actually pretty sad ending the semester with Winkler; don't know if I've seen a professor ever create such relaxed, welcoming learning environment before.
  3. Winkler is an awesome dude to take a class with. The concepts presented in lectures were fascinating. Lectures were humorous and engaging. Definitely take this class just for the experience.
  4. This class was alright, the lectures were too big and ultimately boring though, and Winkler, while a really great, fun guy, wasn't the best teacher. It was pretty easy to just zone out in the class.
  5. First off: excellent class. Some information that wasn't clear to me when I signed up: 165 consists of the three weekly 155 meetings and eight labs over the entire semester (which are moderately time-consuming, but not particularly difficult) plus one additional meeting which focuses much more on the physics, as opposed to theory, which is more the realm of 155. If you do not enjoy physics and/or difficult (but ultimately very rewarding) problem sets, then stay away from this class and stick with 155. However, as someone who has no real intent to major in physics, but nonetheless finds the subject interesting, I am extremely happy with my choice to take 165 and, although it means I have to go to one extra class and do several extra problems on the weekly homework, it is worth it come finals time, when everyone in 155 is stressing out and you get to relax. Professor Winkler is fantastic and he does a great job of explaining the concepts in 155, though I've found that he often moves too fast in 165 and, unless people stop to ask questions (which he very graciously answers) I, along with many of my classmates, find myself quite lost. He is hilarious, offbeat, spacey, and extremely enthusiastic- very much the stereotype of an astronomy professor (I say that in a 100% positive way).
  6. Winkler is a nut, but he's a smart guy. Sit in the front of the class, turn your homework in, and you can be sure to learn a lot from this fellow. Stick out 165, and your hard work will pay off in the grades.
