Evaluation Comments for Davis, J

  1. really really interesting and applicable subject matter. davis can be a little bit of a goon, but he's a great teacher. definitely recommended - I've thought about everything we learned about a LOT since, always good.
  2. Religion and Bioethics is one of the best classes I have taken at Middlebury. The one difficulty I had was on the second exam, he doesn't give you a study guide. I think I got the lowest grade in the class because I tried to learn everything that we had read and talked about instead of focusing on the important bits from lecture. Know any lists (i.e. the 4 principles of bioethics) and the main concepts and you will be fine though. The rest of the course I found awesome, however. Papers are fun, they allow you to be creative with the subjects from class which are so captivating! I definitely thought about issues like abortion and euthanasia for many hours after class ended and still ponder them today. Try to say one quality comment a class. It is fascinating to hear from your peers on these serious issues. Religion and Bioethics is Professor Davis's favorite class and his enthusiasm is SO contagious, so I hope you take this class!
  3. Easily the best class I've taken at Middlebury. First of foremost, Professor Davis is incredible, one of those teachers who could change your life if you let him. The class is totally and completely about his students; for instance, while the class often descends into (occasionally heated) debate, Davis mostly stays out of the way. He never brings his own opinions into the debate, and is instead content to watch, poking and prodding people's opinions to make them think more deeply about what they are saying. In the end, the focus of the class (and his grading) is not what you think about certain hot button issues (abortion, euthanasia, stem cell research, etc), but why. Class itself is almost never boring. The lectures present a lot of material, but even then the discussion is pretty open and free flowing. The best part of the class, and the highlight of my week, were the discussion sections. Davis walks into discussion with a case study, has you read it, and then says go. It was some of the best dialogue I've had with my fellow students here at Midd, and I learned just as much from my classmates as from my professor. So really, if at all possible take this class! Actually, take as many classes as possible with Davis. You won't regret it.
  4. Religion and Bioethics is my favorite class I have taken at Midd. The lectures were both informative and interesting. Although the powerpoints could be a bit sull, the discussion interspersed between each slide made the class fresh and enjoyable. the discussion section of the class was wonderful. Professor Davis really keeps the flow going and presents intriguing scenarios, to say the least. There can be a large amount of reading but they all feel useful to the class. We had a couple of papers and exams but they were all very fair in the grading. the topics for the papers also made them fun to write. Davis was available for help whenever you needed. This class is highly recommended.
  5. This class was absolutely fascinating... in the beginning it starts out a little theoretical but not to worry... it gets much more practical and interesting. The readings aren't killer and the discussions are so interesting and applicable. I would take the class again if I could.
  6. Excellent course. The material is fascinating and relevant, the professor brings a sense of humor and honesty to lectures, and asks probing questions to help you clarify your thinking. I wish I could take another course with this professor, and I wish that more professors took Davis' approach to teaching. This course will actually educate you. Tests were boring because all you had to do to get a good grade was memorize some terms, and readings occasionally felt a little abstract. Other than that, the course gets really high marks. Be prepared to think, and dare yourself to speak up!
  7. I just agree with everyone else. Really fascinating!
