Evaluation Comments for Gould, R.

  1. This course is a wonderful environment to explore the intersection between religion and environmental studies. The readings are very interesting and prof Gould is a knowledgeable and warm resource. The small seminar style is ideal and the conversations are extremely inspiring... Definitely recommended!! Final project allows you the freedom to explore whatever you want. Great opportunity for people who are passionate about religion/ENVS.
  2. I loved this class! It was the only class at Midd that Ive done all the reading for (because it was so interesting). Discussions were great too! There wasn't too much work (three papers, not too much reading) but I did think she graded toughly (that could just be me)
  3. Religion, Ethics, & the Environment with Professor Gould is one of the best classes I have taken at Middlebury College. If you have taken a class with her before and felt that she assigned an insane amount of reading, please consider taking another class with her. She has significantly reduced her assignments to about 100 pages a week, if that much. Professor Gould finds really interesting, provocative articles from many different perspectives. She's great at raising issues for discussion, and she welcomes and encourages you to disagree with her. She's really friendly and absolutely brilliant. The course itself is really valuable given the current political, religious, and environmental climate. This course gets you to look critically at the role of religion in the environment--some good and some bad.
  4. I took a very similar course to this one with professor Gould called Faith, Freedom, and Ecology, which centered on religion, ethics, and the environment. The material was great and you really don't have to do any of the reading if your pressed for time. Class discussions are obviously more interesting if you have done the reading. Professor Gould is awesome, extremely passionate about teaching and always willing to help you with whatever you may need. The problem I found with her style of teaching is that she is pretty busy and therefore pretty unorganized. She always assigns way too much reading and we only end up discussing like one article out of five she gave us to read. She gives a lot of time for essays- we had no written exams, only two major essays (around 15 pages each) and I got higher grades than I thought I would. This was sort of a joke class- super easy and a lot of kids only came to class like once a week, but a good class at that
