Evaluation Comments for Velez-Blasini

  1. This has been the most interesting course I have taken at Middlebury. Professor Velez teaches us about so many facets of our lives from a new and interesting perspective. I found myself thinking about the course material for a while after class. Everyone complains about his tests being hard, but if you know the lectures perfectly (which are more interesting than the readings anyways) and pay attention in class you will undoubtedly get an A- at least. This was an inspiring course that I would and have recommended to all my friends!
  2. Great lecturer. Yes, his tests might have been a little challenging but they are nothing compared to Prof. Kim's tests which blow up people's brains. if you read the material, take notes and listen to him in class you'll be fine. usually what he talked about in class were the main things on the test. often times he also said, "this will be on the test".
  3. Velez is a funny guy but there are projects on top of projects; you have to read the text (you can't really get away with only taking lecture notes), prepare for discussion debates and presentations, write a term paper worth 20% of your grade, and study for the exams -- which were harder than I expected. The class is fascinating but definitely time consuming if you want a good grade.
  4. Super interesting class and Velez has an engaging lecture style. Take it!!
  5. Solid dude.
  6. Interesting class to take as a freshman.
  7. Pretty average class. Discussions are basically presentations everyday, so you only have to prepare if it's your day to present.

  15. The exams are very difficult, so definitely manage time wisely and review your notes and the text book well. Because the material is very hard, I found the tests did not represent all that I had learned and studied for. Definitely work hard and make sure you know the material inside and out. Velez is a great professor and fun guy, but sometimes I found it a little difficult to comprehend some of his lectures. Again, review your notes and the book and make sure you got everything down.
  16. This is a good class, but it is a lot of work. His tests are not easy and are heavily based on the reading. Take notes on your reading! He is really nice and discussion is always interesting.
  17. Interesting material but Velez could be quite condescending. I'd recommend this class with another professor.
  18. Velez's lectures are good, and his supplementary videos are fascinating. The tests are very detailed (especially the multiple choice) so you'll have to do a good bit of studying for exams. His tests are the hardest part. The debate and presentation are not graded harshly at all. I've heard other Intro to Psych professors give higher grades, but Velez is a very good professor and a nice guy, and I recommend him to anybody who's really interested in psychology.
  19. I hated this class! The professor was okay but everything else was so hard! If you want to take Intro to Psychology and get a grade deserving of your time, don't take it with Velez. Please, heed all of the comments above, they won't steer you wrong!
  20. Personally, I found Psych 105 with Professor Velez to be a valuable, interesting, and overall fair course. First of all, Velez is a great lecturer, and really knows his stuff. I enjoyed all of his lectures, which is saying something since this was an 8 AM class. He is very approachable, and genuinely wants his students to do well in his class. The tests, as it has been said, are difficult. However, I feel they were completely reasonable. If you pay attention to his lectures and do the reading, then you'll do just fine. But seriously, when he says do the reading, do the reading. A lot of his multiple choice come straight from the book, while his essays are almost entirely based on lecture material. Keep this in mind while studying for his tests. On the whole though, I?m glad I took Intro Psych with Velez. I felt like I learned the material so well, and got more out of the course than some of my friends in other sections. Is the class a cakewalk? No, but it?s not ridiculous either. Put in the work, and you will reap the rewards.
  21. This is a harder class than you might think...it covers a lot of material. Velez does a nice job of presenting it though, using power points everyday. It got slightly boring but you have to respect the commitment to a medium. Plus it helps with notes at 8 in the morning. Overall, glad I took the class.
  22. Even as someone with no plans to pursue psychology in the future, I enjoyed this class immensely. The readings were a little heavy at times, but many chapters were fascinating. Velez is great at lecturing, and he leads pretty good discussions. Also, he is one of the nicest professors I have met so far, and his excitement during discussions every Friday was infectious. Like many people have said, his tests aren't easy, but I definitely thought they were manageable if you followed the readings and studied leading up to the tests.
  23. I agree with all the other statements posted here. I studied my butt off and still only managed a B+. It's really unfair because I have friends who took intro with other professors and did half the work that I did -- they got better grades than I did. Lectures weren't bad at all and Velez brings in supplementary videos, etc. to make up for the dullness of the book. I hate that book.
  24. Prof Velez is a really nice guy who lecturs well. But the text book was horrible, the chapters were long and dull. Tests were really hard. I spent a lot of time studying and did not do as well i i thought i should have. The discussion sections are pretty worthless, you just have debates which are prepared ahead of time and seem pretty forced. I liked the prof but i really got the sense it was a weed out class.
  25. I would recommend this class to a friend but I would advise them to take it with a different professor, such as Professor Reiss. Velez's exams were extremely tricky and he seemed to make them so on purpose.
  26. This was my favorite class at Middlebury so far. professor velez does a great job with explaining the material clearly and in an exciting way that kept me interested (even at 8am). I always looked forward to class, and we always had engaging discussions when we met in smaller groups. His tests though, were extremely difficult, and his grading was much harder than I had anticipated. I got 2 half grades lower than I believed my average to be. This class is really interesting, but might not do great things for your GPA
  27. i felt like his tests weren't a good representation of what we learned in the course. A lot of the questions were ambiguous and confusing, and there wasn't much other opportunity to convey what I was learning in the class.
  28. This class is extremely time consuming with Professor Velez because the discussions and the readings are sometimes different, meaning you are required to understand both for the exam. Professor Velez is an interesting professor who is very engaging and an excellent person, but he does need to explain some of the material better and thoroughly. I spent a lot of time studying for this class and I did not get the grade worth my efforts, but the grade was mostly based on exams. Overall I would recommend, but try to get another professor.
  29. I had never taken psychology before, but I found this course very interesting. There's a lot of reading, and we covered the material pretty fast. Professor Velez does go through, however, and take out sections from the book so you don't have to study it all for the test. Discussions were fun, and not much prep work unless its your week to present or debate. Lectures were interesting at times, but Professor Velez can make 10 minutes of material last an hour if he gets into it or someone asks a question. Overall, the class atmosphere was friendly and there are only 3 tests and a term paper. not bad.
  30. I looooved velez's class. sometimes the material was really, really dull - but he made it fun for us. yes, tests are hard but you learn the stuff really well!
  31. Prof Velez is the man! I had never taken any psychology before, and he fully engaged me in his lectures. His tests are a bit tricky, and it's almost impossible to retain all of the information from the textbook. Luckily, much of his test material comes from his lectures, which are not really based off of the reading. I found the discussion sections to be really fun. Overall, a good professor who is great to listen to in lecture, but hard tests. Regardless of my final grade, I feel like I learned a lot in this class.
  32. Take this class with Velez. He is an great, engaging lecturer, and the discussion section had a good atmosphere. Exams were tough, but not unreasonable. Overall, fascinating class.
  33. Class was great! Velez's lectures are amazing. He's a bit of a hard grader, but if you're interested in actually learning you should definitely take this class!
  34. Take the class but not with Prof. Velez. His tests are really hard and he is a very hard grader as well. He expects you to retain far too much info from the boring text book. Take it with another professor, I hear the class can be good.
  35. Velez is a great guy, and a funny lecturer. This course does cover a lot of info though, and the textbook chapters are quite long. The tests are a bit tricky - they tend to focus on a few specific details, only about half of which were discussed in class. The debates are interestsing although they're a pain to prepare for. Overall it's a good class but takes a fair amount of time and studying.
  36. great class, but i worked really hard and my grades were lower than i thought i deserved. i would highly recommend this class, but maybe try a different teacher
  37. Velez is an awesome guy. He is super nice and tries his hardest to make class material interesting. His tests can be pretty tricky, but as long as you keep up with the readings and study hard you'll do fine.
  38. this class totally screwed my GPA...
