Evaluation Comments for Williams

  1. Class was basically a discussion. Prof. Williams would often sit back and let us direct the conversation, which I really enjoyed. The material was both timely and fascinating. I would very much recommend this class.
  2. Another great class with Williams. The first six weeks were awesome, the next four very repetitive and the final week or two were good again. The CW was a good bonus, and only required three five page papers, which was great.
  3. This class was by far one of the more demanding I have taken at Middlebury, but the material was beyond interesting which made it worth it. Professor Williams is a VERY tough professor, and since the class is a seminar he requires that everyone speaks (participation is 30% of the grade!) Therefore, students who tend to sit back and let other people do the talking should NOT take this class. Williams picked favorites which was pretty obvious, and he was often in a bad mood. He didn't do much teaching per say because each class was a student-led discussion. This class was actually a great CW course because the amount of writing we did total was only 3 5-page papers, which seems to be on the low side for a CW course. Overall, the material we read was SUPER interesting (and you really have to do it all, which takes up a lot of time per week). This class was very interesting, and if you get over Williams' pushy "everyone must participate in discussion!!!!" tirades, then this class is definitely a great elective/CW option!
