Evaluation Comments for Garcelon

  1. Garcelon is hilarious after you get used to him. There is tons of reading, but once you get into it it's worth it. Some of the material, particlarly at the beginning of the course, can be hard to understand but professor really works hard to help you. Exams are in the form of take-home papers, and if you're a good writer you'll do fine. Going to class is a must though- much of the lecture material isn't in the reading.
  2. I didn't enjoy this class. Prof. Garcelon is funny and does a good job of making the information understandable, but lectures and discussions were for the most part uninteresting. The first three weeks of the class were mainly economics (Smith, Marx, etc.) which I didn't expect or like, although I understand its importance to the rest of the class. Most of the reading was really dry and hard to get through, although I really liked 2 of the books. All the exams are essay questions, which are very difficult to organize or understand what exactly he's asking, since the question itself has so many parts to it (the question for the final is 2 pages long, with 6 numbered requirements and then another whole page describing what else he wants us to include!)
  3. Garcelon is quite a character, very quirky and sometimes unintentionally funny. Maybe because this was an intro course, I found the material really scattered and there was sooooo much to cover.I didnt at all keep up with the readings but if you come to lecture and just take notes Garcelon basically goes over everything. Also, its pretty laid back, and there are only three papers whihc are basically just how well you can sum up the notes he gave you in class. Not a hard class by any means but not the most interesting one Ive taken either. Garcelon seems like a really nice guy though.
  4. Professor Garcelon is really, really great. He is caring, and passionate about the material. He's cooky and very liberal but those are all things I like. I had a really hard time with the material sometimes, but stilll liked the class. I like him more than Sasson, although Sasson is also very good. The Soc Departement is excellent.
  5. Garcelon is quite dry and if you simply repeat his overly simplistic take on the reading you will succeed.
  6. Garcelon is a great person and mentor although his lectures can be rather dry. Despite this, he remains a fair grader and is highly understanding of peoples individual learning styles/personal problems
  7. Although readings were dry at times, if you actually do the work you learn a lot.??This was my first sociology class, and I know that a lot of this information will stay with me for a long time-- and can also be helpful in other classes.
  8. There is a lot of reading, but the exams are 6 page papers, which is a blessing in disguise. If you're a good writer, take the course, otherwise you're screwed. The course is interesting, especially towards the end. The readings are worthwhile, that is if you have the time to do them. This person also suggested: Focus more on specifics-- it gets a bit broad and vague at times.
  9. The reading, although thick at times, was interesting, and I found that I was discussing many of the ideas outside of the classroom with fellow classmates. Although I probably won't take any more sociology courses, I am glad that I got the opportunity to learn some new things and apply them to everyday life. This student also suggested: The course was a little vague at times.
  10. SA 105 is a great intro to sociology course. Marc Garcelon is so caring, tries really hard, and is a brilliant professor. There is a lot of reading but it is not always necessary to do it. Lectures can be boring quite often, but is so much better than SA 103. This student also suggested: Garcelon- he is a great guy, brilliant, fairly new at midd.- he has the potential to be a great professor, but right now he makes some things more complicated/difficult to understand than necessary-overall, though, a great class.
