  6. James West is an awesome person! I'll definitely take another course with him throughout my life in Middlebury, however, be aware: this course is so hard! It's most probably the hardest first year seminar; you read around 250-300 pages a week and write a 3-4 page paper due every Monday, on questions which urge you to think really "deep". You read Mill, Marx, Nietzsche, Dostoevsky, Hitler, Mann, Koestler and Fromm, as well as 2 historical books on the Russian Revolution and the Nazis. If you wish to do nearly-senior amount of work in your freshman year, and are sure that this would be your only hard class, definitely take it, it's more than worth it, as the content you learn is invaluable.
  7. Fantastic course. Probably one of the most difficult first year seminars, but well worth the effort. I will take another course with Professor West. He is a brilliant teacher and incredibly passionate about his students. Awesome course.
  8. West is my hero and he has forever altered the way my brain functions. take the course. long live dionysus!
  9. best course i've ever taken lots of work though - read one book a week and write a paper on it (2-3 pages only though)
  10. If you are ready to do the "senior" amount of work in your freshman year, take the course. If you are ready to change your opinion because of the majority, take the class. If you are a competitive student, this is a course for you!
  11. Don't be fooled by the name- this class is about much more than communism and fascism. If you're interested in an easy first semester, don't take this course. If you don't like spending hours writing an essay, just to go to class and find out how everything you wrote was wrong, don't take this class. But if you want an experience that will profoundly affect your thinking, this class is for you. West is certainly a character, and although I don't particularly like his personality, the class is incredible.
  12. Don't.
  13. This class is hard and a lot of work. You will write a paper each week and then get the ideas of your paper destroyed in class. However, the class was extremely valuable; I learned a great deal and am glad that I took it. Professor West is very knowledgeable and a great professor. Just be prepared to do a lot of work and not always get good grades.
  14. This course stays with you. I will never forget it. Prof. West is incredible and his lectures were hauntingly good. He pulls you in with heavy class participation. Class is a wild ride.
  15. It takes alot of dedication and alot of work but J West is so enthusiastic about it that it is impossible not to join him. Do the work, open your minds, and you have so much to gain. You will be only so lucky to get this FYSE
  16. Take this class because it may be the best you ever take at midd. It will change the way you think and have you hooked on contemporary philosophy. West may seem a bit conceded but he really knows his stuff. It is amazing to see how the great thinkers of history were able to foreshadow the future and understand what was going on in the present. There is A LOT of reading and the 3 page papers will have you staring at your computer screen searching for answers, but in doing so you learn what you are capable of as a thinker. This class is the best way to enter your 4 years at Middlebury. Professor West will be leaving after the 2010 2011 school year so you MUST take this class if you are in the class of 2014. Dont get me started on Nietzsche.....
  17. A lot of work but completely worth it. This course takes history, political science and philosophy into one coherent whole. Professor West is great and always available for help. Writing a paper every week means that your writing will inevitably improve throughout the course.
  18. This seminar has become the Legend. I'm so lucky to be one of the last 14 students to study in this seminar.
