Evaluation Comments for Young H

  1. Helen is friendly but not a horrible professor for this class.
  2. Only take it if you have to for a requirement
  3. Helen will dock your grade exponentially for lack of participation. Even in a 60-person lecture. Just make up dumb questions during class until she knows your name.

  9. Helen Young is great!!!
  10. the material is pretty basic but lecture moves slowly and is boring
  11. To be honest, this has been my least favorite class I have taken here at Midd. I regret signing up for this class. Professor Young's lectures are very redundant and proceed very slowly and are oversaturated by examples. The exams ask a few questions about the concepts we have learned but are mostly comprised of the many examples that Young expects you to memorize. The exams are impossible to do well on as you are expected to be able to recount many experiments in detail when Young gives you the name of the person who performed the experiment, after only mentioning it briefly in class. The exams are very unfair and not reflective of one's understanding of the concepts. Also, Young makes you waste an hour each week in discussion, where you read a useless paper and then recount it in her presence. My advice is to take this class with another professor. Professor Young is the reason I have decided to not be a Bio major, this class was so miserable.
  12. Helen Young has NO IDEA WHAT SHE'S DOING. Seriously, she doesn't understand basic statistics so all of her powerpoints were really confusing (and wrong). Her tests were really unclear or on material we never discussed in class. I studied for every test and got completely different grades on each one (ie they were inconsistent). She also is the only professor who teaches this class that has a discussion section. She literally didn't read the material she assigned for the discussions so everyone just sits there staring at each other. TAKE THIS CLASS WITH SOMEONE ELSE.
  13. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH PROFESSOR YOUNG! She is no a good lecturer at all (we were behind 1 week into the course due to way too many similar overly detailed examples) and yet her tests are ridiculously hard. She tests you on her examples rather than biology concepts. I got a much worse grade in this class than I know I deserved. The material is very easy to grasp yet is you don't memorize the examples she gives in class, you won't feet a good exam grade. Young seems more concerned with putting questions she thinks no one will get right because they weren't paying good enough attention on the test than questions which actually reflect understanding of the material. TAKE THIS CLASS WITH A DIFFERENT PROFESSOR! I would even wait a semester for a different professor if you have to. Professor Young is the worst professor I have had at Midd.
  14. The content of this class is very easy to understand and the concepts are straightforward, but Helen is not concerned with making sure you understand concepts. She tests us mostly on examples she gave in class and expects us to be able to explain a paper that was mentioned in the textbook when she gives us the author's name on a test. Take this with someone else if possible.
  15. Professor Young is terrible. She is very controlling and her tests do not reflect understanding of the material but rather how well you are able to remember specific examples she gave in class. Although she seems nice, she is very controlling and makes the class uncomfortable. The material in this course is very redundant and obvious yet it was hard to do well on tests. If you have taken biology before this class is a waste of time. I would not recommend it to anyone. Try to take it with a different professor if you must.
  16. Young's test question are poorly written even the multiple choice but if you read them correctly you should be just fine. When reviewing for tests you should go through the power points.
  17. Professor Young is the worst professor I have encountered thus far at Middlebury. She is truly an embarrassment to such a fine institution. Not only were her lectures incredibly patronizing and boring, the way she handled student participation during discussion sections was outright condescending. She tests on her own examples, plus the minute details of discussion readings, rather than application of concepts integral to the study of Ecology and Evolution. Furthermore, her blatant disregard and disrespect for other creationist belief systems, i.e. anything religious that deviates from the Big Bang Theory, makes her teaching style offensive. She was never helpful in office hours, and she actually made me feel like I was wasting her time while I was asking for help. If you have the opportunity, do not take Biology with Helen Young--it is a dismal experience.
  18. Helen Young is the reason I am a biology major. I really enjoyed this course. I think she's great and she really really cares about her students!
  19. I've never actually taken a course with Helen but despite our status as mere acquaintances, it's become abundantly clear to me that she cares a lot about her students. I've been graduated for two years and have run into her on several occasions - every time she has been super interested in my recent work and in my ambitions and makes authentic offers to keep her eyes open for jobs that match my interests. These haven't been off-hand comments. She still sends me job ads that match my interests and some of these ads have been the most interesting I've ever seen. I've been really impressed by this and really respect her as an educator.
  20. It's easy if you have an interest in ecology.
  21. Professor Young is great. She's very nice and her zany sense of humor definitely brings something to the class. However, having taken AP Bio, I found this class to be a near complete waste of my time. I found professor Young's test frustrating, as I knew all the material, but still ended up getting a B in the class overall.
  22. If you have fulfilled the biology AP, this class is unnecessary, but tweaked just enough so that the test required for opt-out cannot be passed. Lectures are boring and redundant. This class is easy with minor background in any biology. Lab sections were excellent when taken with Prof. Landis. Opt-out if possible.
  23. Prof Young is a terrible lecturer but the material is pretty straight forward so cramming before the exams was doable. I'm not sure about other people but the labs took a lot of time not because they were difficult but because there was a lot to do with every lab.
