  3. No need to go to class. Just read the book.
  4. Sontum is bottom two worst teachers I have had, ever. It's probably good he is retiring. Teaching seems to be all over the place. Examples are not given for major concepts. Thank God for lab. Young He is great and the labs are fun and relatively easy. However, do not take this course with Sontum unless you have had AP Chemistry and can teach this stuff to yourself.
  5. Although Chem 104 is a very typical required course for many majors. Sontum tries to explain the information in detail and can be particularly boring at times. He does try to bring in demonstrations almost every class which can liven up the class a lot. He definitely cares about his students and wants everyone to get A's on his tests. Before every test, he wishes us luck and hopes that at least one person will get a 100%. It's also nice that he has resurrection points in teh final which can make up for loss points on the mid terms. He has an absolute grading scale in which an A is an 85-100 which makes up for his hard tests and that he doesnt scale at all. Overall, a nice guy though boring at times.
  6. Homework assignments are due before he even covers the topic. Lab is about a month ahead of the lecture but they still expect you to figure out how to do the problems on your own. Some of the questions on the tests come from the problem sets, others you look at and have no idea where he is coming up with it or where or where to start. DO NOT take this course with Sontum. You will regret it horribly.
  7. The lectures/tests were disorganized and hard to understand/do well on. I would recommend taking this class with anyone else if possible
  8. Sontum is such a nice person and incredibly friendly. However, it is a little hard to pay attention to his voice and the lectures can be boring. It is a much harder class than Chem 0103. He is much better at answering questions outside of class. His lectures can be a bit disorganized and i never understand how all the concepts relate to one another.
  9. Steve's voice is very...soothing, to say the least. Sometimes a problem for staying awake during lecture.
  10. Sontum's Lectures are so monotonous that I fell asleep very often...and that's not easy for me. I feel like he would be a very good teacher for a higher level course in which there would only be very interested students. His lectures are confusing. He is a really nice...kinda funny guy, but the class is too complex for a beginner level course.
  11. Prof. Sontum tries to explain all of the information in detail, though some concepts should not be as extensively covered. He has the tendency to be a bit monotonous and can be particularly boring. To make up for this fact, he brings in demonstrations to almost every class. He definitely cares about his students and wants everyone to get A's on his tests. It's nice that he has resurrection points in the final exam. These are points that can make up for loss points on the mid-terms. He also has an absolute grading scale in which an A is anywhere from an 85 to a 100, which definitely makes up for his hard exams and the fact that he doesn't scale at all.
  12. Sometimes lectures were a bit over our heads and seemed not that relevant, so doing the readings was key. Tests were based mostly on homework, so doing those was also really important, even though they are only extra credit. Although not the best lecturer, Steve is so so friendly and really cared about his students. Also, if you go to his office hours he is really good at explaining concepts one-on-one. Don't let the promise of resurrection points fool you into blowing off the midterms, though. If you don't learn it the first time around chances are you'll be way too swamped to get it down for the final so keep on top of things.
  13. Sontum's lectures are confusing. There were days when I question why I even went to class instead of hanging out in my dorm room and reading the text. He's a nice guy, but I felt I learned very little from him. However, he is very helpful if you go in to ask him questions during office hours. Honestly this class is probably not very useful unless you are going on to be a Chem major, or study organic or bio chem.
