Evaluation Comments for Spatafora

  1. This course moved slowly at the beginning and very quickly at the end, but Spatafora was very good about giving us lots of feedback on our work. Her tests are hard, unless you are good at both memorizing facts and synthesizing concepts. I did very well by reading the textbook and ignoring the handouts she gave in class.
  2. Spatafora was a lovely woman, but an awful teacher. Although she was very willing to talk to students with questions, she was very ineffective in teaching the material. She didn't know how to answer most of the simple questions that people asked in class (other students who had done the reading had to answer FOR her). Most of the time she just told us to read the book if she didn't understand a concept well enough to present it in lecture. Overall, a nice woman but totally inappropriate professor for this class. I probably could have taken it online -- with the same outcome.
  3. This is the absolute worst class I have taken at Middlebury. Dr. Spatafora is unorganized, unprepared, late in returning exams/homework, and generally unavailable during her posted office hours.
  4. Grace is very nice, but very disorganized. Her tests/quizzes are impossible, but in the end she curved everything so we didn't all fail. She's very enthusiastic, but was frustratingly inconsistent at times (ex. she always said she cares most about the "big picture" but then would ask very nitpicky questions). She made me think for myself which was great...overall an OK experience, but very difficult and time consuming.
