  4. Prof. Smith Abbot is a fantastic lecturer and an incredibly nice person. She is approachable and always willing to help or answer questions. It is a survey class, so there is a lot of material to get through, but the work load is not too intense. The exams require a lot of memorization, but if you put in the time and effort to learn the stuff, you will do really well!
  5. This is a great class. I took it just to fulfill some requirements, and I'm really glad I did. The material is relevant to real life (aka being a culturally savvy member of society), and the art's cool to look at, too. Prof. Smith-Abbot was great--I was bummed because her next class didn't fit with my schedule. She was ALWAYS available for help, and was very willing to make extra appointments if her office hours didn't work. The papers were interesting and not too hard, but the midterm and finals were, simply by virtue of having to memorize 80 works of art. However, that's the most work you'll have to do, and if you keep up with the works, you'll do GREAT. Wonderful class!
  6. Professor Smith-Abbot is phenomenal. She is understanding of a college student's work load, she is sympathetic to the high levels of stress we live with, and most of all she is very supportive of the class and students and simply wants us to do well in her class. Beyond this, she is brilliant and really knows her Art History. Lectures feel a little bit more like a story rather than a lecture as she doesn't read from her notes. The class consists of 2 papers, 2 exams, and really is fascinating. I highly recommend this course to students thinking about majoring in Art History, or simply looking for a fourth class.
  7. Abbot is a great renaissance era teacher but struggled to make any sort of continuity in the second half of the class...modern art. She also is a stickler on the exams. She demands you memorize exact dates, full names for work and artist and other random crap... I am fairly certain that our average class grade on the mid term was in the 60-70 range. Her decision to make you memorize such specific information disrupts any understanding of the evolution of art. Dont take this if you are interested in art and not a major.
