Evaluation Comments for Intro to Sociology of Gender

  1. This course has changed me entire outlook on the Gender Studies Program here at Middlebury as well as my own previous perceptions of class, race, and gender divides within the United States. The professor was continuously captivated my attention every class period. In fact, I had never missed a single class because I felt I missing on an opportunity to gain insight on gender studies at Middlebury (at least until finals kicked in). Maybe I am a bit biased in a sense that before entry to this class I never really held with traditional views of masculinity or femininity as most people around me, who do not conform to these identities either, label me as ambiguous. I could tell that for some students in the class, it was hard to face the reality of how the world thought of their own bodies and the notion that the body isn't our own. As much as we'd like to think we are engaging in body project for our own benefit, underlying that benefit is usually conflicts involving gender and its performativity. Whether its Guyland or the Body Project, I feel that it is crucial for one to realize that nothing should be taken as a given. It was great to see the similarities and differences between the gender theorists and gain a multiple perspectives on the issue. Although I am unable to continue my GSFS studies next semester, I hope to encounter more courses like this one in the future.
