  3. There was a lot of reading for this class and until you understand what to look for it can be very overwhelming. The essays for this class are very difficult. There is a word limit which really inhibits what you can say. Overall this class turned me away from Political Science because of the competitive atmosphere. Be warned: She plays favorites so speak up A LOT during lecture and discussion.
  4. This class was excellent, Professor Horning is a brilliant professor who is also very accessible. I learned so much from this class, and found myself citing the topics of my papers in political debates and while watching movies and reading the news at home. I gained so much from this class, and walked away from it a few tiems actually shaking because I was so excited by what I was learning. Some of the reading is a bit dry and there is alot of it, but that is political science for you. Overall, wonderful class.
  5. Perhaps it's the nature of comparative politics, but I regret having taken this course more than any other yet (though it is required for my major). While I don't mind reading a lot for classes, especially because that is the nature of political science courses, I found this course had unnecessarily boring and tedious readings. For instance, there were many technical readings which I doubt were helpful to anyone in the class. Also, lectures were not directly related to the readings, and were consistently too broad to gain anyone's interest. The readings were concrete, if not technical, while lectures broad. If you like to memorize concepts by keywords, this is a class you would enjoy. Essay topics are extremely broad as well, while students are only allowed 1,000 words. It is essentially impossible to get an intelligent point across while satisfying the references she obviously is looking for from the readings. In the end all papers end up reading the same. That said, Professor Horning is a very nice professor, and an understanding one at that. While I would not recommend anyone take this course, I would recommend her in an African Studies course.
  6. I recommended this course several times. I told them that while the professor horning is the most challenging professor I've ever had, I learned far more than I ever could have imagined. The nature of political science means a lot of reading. Some of it is interesting, most of it is not. The lectures were extremely informing, if a bit routine. The discussions were interesting however I will say that professor horning was easily lead off topic, and therefore we rarely discussed the readings or topics learned specifically in class. Either way, being there helped you learn something valuable. The essays are very important, and as other people have said, they are broad prompts with a small word limit. But the word limit is part of the challenge. She knows what she's doing. She wouldn't make it impossible to successfully complete the essay. Overall I loved this class. It was my hardest but it was my best.
  7. Prof. Horning's nickname isn't papershredder for no reason. Her most widely distributed comment is: "You lack a thesis" and the grading is harsh. There's a LOT of reading. Some is interesting, some isn't. The discussions are ineffective since she prefers not to contribute. Instead she sits in her corner taking notes on each person's performance. She's very nice and approachable but she's clearly bored whilst teaching. It's a lot of work, the grading system is unclear and even unfair, but you do come out of it with a better understanding of politics across the world.
  8. Prof Horning was very nice and always available for help. Some lectures were fascinating, others boring, but I figure that is par for the course for Intro Comparative. The readings were unnecessarily dry at times, but all were applicable to the class and especially papers. Papers were graded strictly, but fairly; however, topics were very broad despite her more narrow expectations for content. She gave extensive comments on papers, which is always a plus. It did seem, at times, that she did prefer some students to others, but it had no effect on grading or anything material. To get an A with Prof Horning, constant lecture and discussion participation is needed.
