Evaluation Comments for Essig, L

  1. I LOVE LAURIE. She easily became my favorite professor. Great class.
  2. Essig is amazing -- super straightforward and easy going professor. She is so smart but is not intimidating. Makes you think twice about things you just accepted as fact in your daily life. 4 paper assignments 3-5 pages and short discussion questions on readings. Very manageable workload.
  3. This may be my favorite class I have taken at Middlebury. Essig is great. Discussions are great. It will make you think differently. I would take this class again if I could. I would definitely recommend it. Lots of difficult readings, and papers are a bit tough and time consuming, but aside from that not too much time spent outside of class.
  4. My favorite class in my fall semester, Essig is hilarious and incredibly smart, I highly recommend this for everybody.

  20. Absolutely fantastic. Essig is strong in her opinions and works hard to open the minds of her students and encourages discussions. Material challenges boundaries and peaks interest to new levels; countless times students regaled the class with a tale of a great recent discussion with friends provoked by ideas brought up in class. Don't miss this class, especially with this professor!
  21. Yes! This was one of the best courses I've ever taken at Middlebury. Although the class discussions were not always great and Essig sometimes was confronted with stereotypical ignorance and stubbornness, she unwaveringly kept pushing controversial subject matter and challenged students to rethink our constructions of gender. She is a very intelligent scholar and engaging lecturer. She also is very supportive of students and is available outside of class. If you want to take this class, go in with an open mind and really try to challenge yourself... It felt like many students in the class didn't gain much because they didn't get outside their norms or participate much and explore their opinions.
  22. The class was great and I loved it. I would recommend keeping an open mind because some of my peers were less receptive to the material taught.
  23. The class forced me to think about gender in a new way and more fully understand many different aspects of gender. Laurie is a really fun teacher who makes the topics relevant to your life. However, she often gets stuck on her own opinion and there are many debates in class that while informative have to result in her winning. she is very flexible on deadlines but expects her students to eventually do all the work and do it as well as they can.
  24. Laurie is the best. The best. Better than Linus. Take this instead of Linus' classes. Ok?
  25. This is a great class and one that I think every student should take before graduating. Although I had come into contact with a few of the theorists we studied here in other classes, for the most part, the readings were fascinating (if somewhat dense). The class atmosphere was very open and friendly, but (for me) the structure of the class was sometimes TOO open and free-form. There are four papers that can be completed in any way that you want, which probably works to the advantage of the more creative students out there. For me, I did well on all of them, but still ended up with a B+ in the class. Despite that disappointing end result, I would recommend this class to most people. Just be prepared to be obviously engaged and participate actively, or your grade might suffer.
  26. Professor Essig does a really good job approaching the topic of gender from a completely different perspective and explaining concepts that are really hard to wrap your brain around, sometimes. She clearly cares a lot about the subject, and does a good job of providing materials that explore the topic of gender from numerous points of view, rather than just obvious ones. She is very firm in her opinions about gender, but this usually leads to thought provoking discussions; she is always willing to hear people out. In general, you do need to do the reading in order to do well on the papers, but they are pretty interesting for the most part. She is very understanding of conflicts and is flexible with deadlines if you talk to her.
  27. Do the readings for each paper and make sure to cite the authors you read in the four papers over the course of the year. Other than that, show up to class and discussion and you should be fine. Overall good class.
  28. This class convinced me to declare my major in SOAN. I've never seen a professor care as much about the material they are presenting as Laurie does.
  29. Great intro class for WAGS or SOAN! This class is one that will change your life and completely alter your perception of the world. Laurie is great-one of the most passionate (and arguably radical) professors at MIdd. I loved her! The papers are easy and even though there are assignments you can basically write whatever you want if you show you did the reading. Laurie is very chill, offered lots of extra credit and made several of the papers optional (there were only 4 short ones to begin with) in exchange for participation in a workshop or collaborating on a zine. Overall a great class that EVERYONE should take!
  30. Essig was a fairly hard grader on papers, but the course material was really interesting. she really gets you thinking about how our society is structured and why. she also reveals some shocking truths. i didn't know what to expect going into it but i ended up really enjoying it, even though i didn't get the grade i hoped for.
  31. She rocks. So does the class.
  32. This course really did help me to consider not only gender, but many other aspects of our society as well. Essig challenged us with really difficult readings, but also spent time in helping us to understand them.. Papers were very straightforward-you got the sense that the only reason she assigned them was because the administration required her to have some standard of evaluation to make sure we were doing the readings. Discussion sections were really fun, we brought in magazines and watched Youtube videos for an hour. Very chill. My one complaint was that at times her lecture lacked focus, and she seemed really frazled when we didn't understand her main point. But overall, it was an interesting course that helped me to consider my own life in a new light.
  33. While this class (and Laurie herself) can rub some people the wrong way, it was one of those classes that really changed my life. I found the readings and the subject matter to be fascinating. Laurie pushes her students to consider issues they never would have otherwise, often forcing them outside their comfort zone. This was one of the most valuable classes I was able to take at Midd and it really made me want to not only pursue a career in academia, but to specifically focus on gender.
  34. If you're interested in gender, this class is really, really interesting! The atmosphere of the class is relaxed, readings are usually provocative, and papers are the perfect level of challenging. I rave about this class to all of my friends--it was definitely my favorite class this semester!
  35. Professor Essig is an amazing teacher. First off, she is a perfect embodiment of the material we learn about in the class. Her appearance is gender ambiguous, and within the first 3 weeks of class, you already know that she is gay, and has two children as a single mom! Professor Essig presents mind boggling statistics that question everyday myths about gender, race, and sexuality. This class is incredibly important for anyone and everyone to reevaluate one's views on gender, which we find in this course, are mostly constructed by the society's we live in. The readings we do in this class are shocking and fascinating. The papers are extrememly easy. Professor Essig basically let's you chose what you want to write and how, as long as you show her that you have read the authors of the unit. She loves people who participate. Ther discussion sections are a lot of fun, as she encourages us to bring in anything from Victoria's secret magazines to Cosmopolitan! I would highly recommend this course to anyone!
  36. Great and easy class.
