  2. OSTER IS THE MAN. not joking.... i am pretty sure everyone gets an A in orgo lab. its pretty hard not to. oster keeps the discussion prelabs interesting (often adding outrageous music to his presentations). but hes one of the most approachable professors i've had at middlebury. he invited the whole class to his house to have a bbq and learn how to vaccinate sheep... i dont really know what to say. enjoy orgo lab with oster, cus it doesn't get much better.
  3. Oster is such a bad lab instructor, he does not explain what we actually do in lab very well.
  4. Oster is a very fun professor, with a great personality. The labs reports are relaxed, the grading is relatively relaxed, which makes it easier to handle the lecture portion of class.
  5. labs were LONG! but required for the course. oster is an awesome professor and isnt too tough with grading, as long as you put the effort in.
  6. Oster is quirky, but this is an awesome class. Very nice compared to cell bio or even chem 104 - lab reports are graded harder for grammar then anything else, but be sure to have all the pieces he asks for (ie scientific references). I felt Oster was an actual liberal arts teacher, as opposed to a hard core science professor that you normally see. He really tries to get students to think outside the box, so have fun with the lab reports because you'll never get something like him again!
  7. Once you figure out orgo lab- and once you figure out Oster- it's really not that bad. Oster has a lot to teach you, even if it isn?t chemistry. Don?t be afraid to make absurd connections between chemistry and the outside world; you?ll notice quickly that Oster himself makes a lot of them (lord of the rings, the beatles. political revolutions, etc.) Since the labs themselves are stressful and tedious, at least have fun with the write-ups. Don?t forget to include a title, safety procedures, references on your title page, do a yield, and include a table for IR (either #1 or #2)/NMR/GCMS. Basically, if you?re taking this class, you?re probably premed or a science major, so enjoy the break from chemistry and learn to love it!
  8. Oster is just a bit crazy. He has ridiculous mood swings. Some days in class he almost refuses to help or answer questions, others he is very helpful. See if you can sign up for a mid week lab section. Avoid mondays or fridays at all costs. Monday labs make the worst mistakes and friday labs get the least help from oster. Oster is actually a cool guy to talk to. He definitely likes to talk (see one of the above comments). Just be warned: he tries very hard to avoid helping you outside class.
  9. Oster will kill you on the formatting, he's fairly lax on the actual content. Make sure you format your lab reports correctly from the start of the class. For the lab questions, find friends to help you. The only way to find the answers is through dredging the internet.
