Evaluation Comments for Woolson

  1. Profesora Woolson really devotes time and energy to teaching her classes and helping students if they approach her for help. However, I rated this course atmosphere as "competitive" because my section was filled with a wide range of ability levels, and Prof. Woolson would put people on the spot to talk when they might not have been comfortable doing so. There were a lot of little assignments that tended to really add up on the homework side of things, and if you had no prior knowledge of the topics (my case), the workload became much more exaggerated. That said, I learned a lot of interesting / important things and feel I understand these issues with more clarity. Course was multi-faceted, with readings, movie screenings, writing assignments, etc...good to use Spanish in all those contexts.
  2. Some of the material was interesting, but Woolson assumed we had way more background knowledge on economics and environmental issues than we did, which made understanding some of the readings almost impossible. Also, we spent a month learning about economics, which was really boring. Discussion was painful much of the time. I think I do have a better understanding of some of the major issues facing latin america and spain, but gaining that knowledge wasn't a good experience. Still one of the better Spanish courses I've taken, but that's not saying much.
