Evaluation Comments for Evancho, M.

  1. Mark is a wonderful human being. Although I wasn't always enthralled by the basic studio art curriculum (I'd been expecting something more theater-specific), I loved the atmosphere of the class. It was like a small group of friends just hanging out and shooting the shit.
  2. Mark is a very enthusiastic and encouraging professor. I think I would have liked this class a lot more if it focused on an actual introduction to set, lighting, and costume design. The first half felt like intro to visual arts-- think value scale, colour wheel, perspective, drawing the human body etc. This was disappointing as I felt like it was not what I signed up for. The two theatre related-projects we did were a 'sculptural response' to a play and a poster for a show, which were both fairly easy. We wrote two critiques on the faculty shows of the term which was helpful and created some interesting class discussions, but I still feel like I have a lot to learn about design in theatre. Another thing to be aware of is that although Mark has a lot of energy, he can easily go off-topic and lose track of time. So just be prepared for a chill class dynamic and flexible schedule...as goes the arts! A good class for someone with very little visual arts experience and is looking for something "hands-on," but I would reconsider if you're serious about learning about a certain design aspect of theatre.

  4. Mark is an incredibly sweet guy, and creates a really positive classrom atmosphere. I took this class thinking it was theater design and it was really much more of a studio art class..so if you're having trouble getting into a studio art class, i would definitely recommend this one. you will have to log a bunch of hours of studio time, but probably many fewer than those in the art dept. if you are looking for a highly academic or intellectual take on art and design, this is probably not the class for you.
