  2. Best class I took at midd! Take it early if you are a SOAN major and it will help you an ENORMOUS amount in all your other classes. Totally changed the way I think about culture and anthro as a discipline. Mike is also a great teacher. His oddball metaphors actually make some of the dry stuff interesting and make all of it memorable. the semester i took it the class was really small, which was ideal in some ways, but also a little intimidating because the class was dominated by these two super-smarty-pants types, and the rest of us were basically newcomers to the major and were in a little over our heads, but as the last person said, Mike is really into effort. Not like "A for effort" but he knows how to take raw hard work and channel it into something useful and good if you go talk to him. Also, read that cheesy "how to read and write" hand out he gives out in the beginning of the semester about identifying arguments and evidence. I thought I knew how to read and write before this class, but he really taught me to look critically at the material and not take it on face value even if a "professional academic authority" published it. GREAT CLASS GREAT PROF, in sum.
  3. Really great class, probably the most I've ever learned in one class at Middlebury. Mike does a great job of teaching theory and making us actually USE it. You may spend a fair amount of time preparing and working for this class, but it comes with the territory and is definitely worth it.
  4. Mike is AMAZING! Such a fun guy, yet so dorky and entertaining at the same time. Overall the material of this class is super boring, but Mike does what he can to make it interesting. He is always available for extra help and he is one of those professors who really wants you to succeed and will go out of his way to make sure you do. He puts a lot of importance on improvement and seems to love it when you come to his office hours. The class isn't easy, but if you try, Mike will definitely notice. I don't know if I would take this if I wasnt a SOAN major, but overall I learned a TON and got to have a really great professor.
