Evaluation Comments for Soltan, U.

  1. If you study Arabic, take it. It's an easy class, the readings are a breeze and usually mildly interesting, the homework is thought-provoking, and all exams are take-home/open-note. Usama is super relaxed in the classroom. Sometimes the material can get a little dry especially when covering nitty-gritty technical linguistic stuff, but when we talked about things like religion/politics/gender/class it was fascinating. If you take it before you go abroad it'll help you understand and prepare for the fusha/aamiyah diglossia. If you take it after you go abroad you're guaranteed to have at least 5 moments in class or doing a reading when the lightbulb goes on and you FINALLY understand something that someone said when you were in Egypt or Jordan 5 months ago.
  2. Usama is very clear as what he is teaching, as we always joke, he is "the army officer of Arabic classes". everything needs to be clear, precise and on time when he teaches. But he is also very understanding for students' schedule, so he is flexible with deadlines. The materials are very intersting to understand Arabic as a whole system from a big picture point of view, so I will be able to handle Arabic during language class much better already knowing the framework. The workload is not extremely overwhelming, grading is fair, Usama tries to let everyone to show their efforts and get an A. Just do you homework carefully and all shall be well.
