Evaluation Comments for Oxfeld, E.

  2. Its a good class. Nothing special. I would take a 200 level soc class before I took this. The concepts are pretty dry, but Oxfeld tries her best to keep it interesting. Its not too much work, you only write one paper of your choice and the exams are essays that you can prepare before hand. Oxfeld is good prof. so if your interested in SOAN its not bad to take
  3. An easy class, but you still learn a lot. Oxfeld can be a bit boring at times but she is incredibly sweet and nice. If you do the readings and participate in discussions, the class can be interesting and worthwhile. We had one paper, a midterm, and a final.
  4. A lot of people bash Oxfeld for being a bad professor, but in my opinion I thought she did very well. Although the lectures covered rudimentary material, I thought it was interesting how she complemented the material we learned in lectures with outside ethnographies. Discussions were in question/answer form but we often went on tangents that were pretty interesting. Bottom line: SOAN 103 is a great intro class and it really got me interested in the field.
  5. The concepts in this course were interesting, however, required lots of film screenings about 1 very week. also discussions were like pulling teeth. Only about four people talked in the discussion and oxfeld just asked questions to the class. it was one of the worst presented discussions. She is very easy to get in touch with and is always happy to meet with you. This class is almost all reading, you write one 5 page paper, and take a mid-term and final. not to much work.
  6. Try to find a different professor. Honestly, the material was presented in a very dry manner, and the "discussion" sessions consisted of her asking the class one question after another.
  7. By far the worst class I've taken here. This professor is an insult to Middlebury College. I would not recommend her to my worst enemy.
  8. The information I learned in this class not only was applicable to other classes I was taking at the time, but Im still finding it very useful. She did a good job of giving a=us a solid understanding of a very wide range of topics, and I feel comfortable discussing culture in a meaningful way now. The structure of the class is basically you read an ethnography (all of which I found interesting) and then discuss them on Fridays, but theres no check to see if youve read them until the midterm and final, so dont fall behind. I didnt find it hard to keep up, and the knowledge I gained was very, very well worth it.
  9. the material was incredibly fascinating and there was not much work at all except for the readings. though there was a lot of reading, there was only one 3-4 page essay, one midterm and a final. i would defintely recommend this class
  10. This course does allow you to take the upper level courses in this department, however I found this class very boring and minimally useful. Professor Oxfeld is a very nice person, but presents the material in a very boring fashion. The class time was spent going over pre-made powerpoints very quickly. It was hard to listen to professor Oxfeld and take notes at the same time. She does give study guides for the midterm and final which is helpful, but some of the terms had not been mentioned in class. I would recommend taking this class with a different professor.
  11. This class is a great overall look at the study of anthropology. Oxfeld organizes the class well so the topics flow nicely together. Sometimes her lectures can be dry and boring but for the most part the topics are interesting so even if she is not sufficiently engaging the material can keep you focused. The discussion sections for this class are great and Oxfeld really pushes you to delve into the readings and the different cultures. The readings for this class are fascinating and are definitely worth reading, although there is a lot of them and they can take up quite a bit of time sometimes. I would definitely recommend taking this class if you are interested in anthropology as it gives an overall picture of what the study of anthropology will entail and some very interesting examples of past anthropological studies.
  12. Dry course material but Oxfeld did her best with it. Don't expect to be thrilled with lectures, but some of the readings were fascinating.

  14. The class wasn't amazing, but it wasn't awful either.??It was decent, as far as big lectures go.???Anyway, the class was a lot of reading, but most people didn't do it.??A good class to take, but not if you're looking for??a real challenge or a lot of substance, although the books and reading material were interesting.
