  3. Great class. Prof Stoll is awesome and really funny. Discussions were usually pretty interesting and everyone was very engaged. Lectures were long and sometimes boring, but there was the occassional bit of fascinating information. Stoll's a really cool guy. Take this class.
  4. Anthropology is a fascinating subject and Stoll, between highly opinionated (usually somewhat rediculous) statements, keeps things lively. The material will be relevant and discussions will be interesting. Do the reading-- it's worth while and really not too life consuming. They're good books to know.
  5. It's very easy to fall behind in the reading for this class, so try to keep up on it from the beginning. It's a big class, but you should still go to lecture because it's interesting and the T/F quizzes pretty much come from the notes. Discussions were helpful and usually pretty fun. Stoll is a good professor but he struck me as really self-important and a bit pompous. If you answer a question wrong or happen to disagree with him, he is not at all delicate about it. He also gets an absurd amount of pleasure from bashing republicans, which is right in line with everyone in the class, but still inappropriate.
  6. Great professor. Very interesting and pretty easy reading, and excellent discussions. Not a hard class, as Stoll says himself, "This isn't rocket science." But valuable nonetheless, certainly opens up your mind to other cultures and is a good orientation to the methods of sociology.
  7. This class had a lot of reading, but you can get enough out of it by skimming. Lecture combined with attending discussion help (as one would hope), and you don't have to work too hard to do well and to leave with some useful knowledge.
  8. It's a lot of reading, but interesting if you like the topic.
  9. great professor, very interesting lectures and readings.
  10. Good class. Readings were interesting and helped me gain a wider view of how different societies have functioned. Stoll wants his students to do well, but the five quizzes tended to be difficult and somewhat tricky. He has given the opportunity to improve the overall grade by an additional essay. He is funny and takes off his shoes in discussion. I enjoy seeing him around campus.
  11. This class is not very engaging. A lot of the stuff we read would maybe be more meaningful in a context other than Anthro 101, where most of the class discussions are superficial and sensationalistic (not Stoll's fault though). I think Stoll is a funny guy, so the classes are interesting, if basic because we have to cover so much material in such a short time. My one bone to pick with him is that I don't think he encourages critical thinking when it goes against his own opinion. He's not into ambitious arguments if they aren't neatly summed up. All the tests come directly from class notes, SO TAKE GOOD NOTES AND MEMORIZE THEM. (which stinks as a learning technique). My other bone to pick with him is that he is a STICKLER FOR DEADLINES. I handed in something late and he lowered my grade a lot even though I told the truth about why I was overdue (I was really stressed), rather than lying and saying something like I had five other papers due on the same day or some crap that people pull sometimes. Anyway, I guess it's ok. As a professor, you have to draw the line somewhere. And maybe he thought I thought I was a hot shot becuase I had taken theory before the intro class and new a lot of stuff that other people didn't. Oh well..... Anyway, Stoll is one-of-a-kind, no-bullshit kind of person, so if you like straight forward, opinionated people, take this class! Oh, the other thing I think is a little much is how he assigns so many movies. But I guess thats the pedagogy of the future? It's cool because Stoll is very different than a lot of the other SOAN teachers, so if you've had Svea and Mike, you're in for something really different with him. Also, if you are really SOC-y, you might really not like stoll, or you really will because he's kind of cynical. Maybe that's why I was unhappy in this class?
  12. this class was not difficult. there was a lot of reading, some of which was not necessary. prof. stoll's lectures sometimes seemed repetitive after the assigned reading. the quizzes were harder than the midterm and final and they were largely based on his lectures.
  13. A lot of reading which is difficult to get away with not doing, but not a difficult class at all if you attend the lectures or get the notes from a friend. Material is interesting and worth knowing. Some of the readings are outdated while others are actually good reads. Stoll is a nice guy too who is kind of weird but it's endearing.
  14. This has so far been one of my absolute least favorite classes at Midd. This could be, however, because I just really didn't like the subject matter and found most of it pretty pointless knowledge to have. It was so abstract and subjective but then you were tested on random terms and sections from the TON of reading. Prof Stoll seems really nice and like he is really passionate about the subject, however, lectures are quite boring and you need to copy everything he says in lecture into your notes verbatim. Someone who really likes Soan might really like this class. This was meant to be my dabbling in the subject but I certainly will not be taking any more Soan classes.
  15. Overall I liked the class and thought it was incredibly interesting. Stoll is a nice guy and seems really interested in the topic. This isn't a course where you can miss lectures--he asks questions about veryVERY small details on the quizzes and the midterms. Attendance is really important. There is a lot of reading in this class, but skimming works pretty well. Overall I liked the class and learned a lot.
  16. Stoll is awesome. he's really funny, and discussion groups are fun. You can get most of the stuff you need to know from the books just by skimming them, and most of the quizzes and tests are from his lectures. he talks really fast, so it's good to study with a group so you can get the things you missed before the tests. This class is pretty awesome.
  17. Stoll is my favorite professor at Midd. If you aren't sure why you would ever take an anthro course, Stoll is reason enough.
  18. It was sort of boring and excessive but I got a good grade. So I guess is was worth it?
  19. This class is basic, and you don't have to attend the lectures. There is a considerable amount of reading, but it doesn't have to be done carefully. Discussions really help if you attend.
