  2. Do not take this class unless you absolutely cannot avoid it. I loved Xu Laoshi as a Chinese drill prof and I like him as a person in general, but this class is torture. The material we read has the potential to be interesting, but it is so (literally) foreign that without some help, it's practically unintelligible. And Xu does not really provide that help. Class discussions, as a result, were dull. They were based off of whatever the student presentation for the day was on, but since students had no insight into the literature, I learned nothing. On top of that, his evaluation of writing is very strange. I did my best on the paper that contained the least substance. I literally had to dumb down my writing in order to do well in this class. Xu is a really nice guy, and really tries to make this class work, but it simply does not.
  3. If you are at all interested in Chinese culture, this course gives a CRUCIAL overview of poetry and ancient texts vital to the culture of modern China. Xu doesn't really do much for this class. Work in minimal, but his lectures can be difficult to get through. He may be dynamic as a drill teacher, but considering that this subject is his forte, it could be taught a lot better.
