Evaluation Comments for Nelson M

  1. No Comment
  2. Readings were fascinating but class periods and prof added nothing. No organization and very subjective grading.
  3. There is a LOT of reading that is pretty much not important for the class. Read the books, but the e-reserve articles we hardly talked about. Nelson is simultaneously hilarious and intimidating: I liked listening to her lecture every day. She relates things to the real world very well. She is a tough but very fair grader: she will not cut you any slack but you'll get a good grade if you put in some serious work.
  4. Professor Nelson is amazing! She is so passionate about the material you can't help but share her enthusiasm. She teaches in a manner so that students can see exactly how theories and topics relate to real life. I would highly recommend any class with Professor Nelson. I have absolutely nothing bad to say about her or her class.
  5. Prof. Nelson is very knowledgable and enthusiastic about this material, and her lectures add a great deal to the readings. She also does a superior job integrating discussion seamlessly into the lecture, even with a bigger class. Especially for an 8 a.m., the class was lively and always worth attending. Definitely take it if you can!
  6. I think that this class is Professor Nelson's speciality and it shows. She is very knowledgable about the material. She assigns a lot of reading but it's not necessary to obsessively read all of it. All the readings are discussed in class at some point. Nelson is a funny lady which makes the lecture much more interesting. Overall, really interesting class.
  7. Professor Nelson is hilarious. I really enjoyed each lecture; she works it into a discussion very well. There was tons of reading. I did it all, most was discussed at least briefly, some was nearly irrelevant. She is a tough grader but gives fair grades in the end. Material was mostly interesting.
  8. This class is amazing! Nelson is enthusiastic, energetic, and very clear in explaing key concepts in a coherent manner. She mixes (sometimes dry) sociological theory with concrete, fascinating case studies and ethnographies. Class discussion is lively (would have liked the class to be smaller to encourage this even more), and papers/exams are hard but Nelson is explicit in what to write/study, so grading is fair in that respect. Lots of reading, but all of it is relevant and interesting. Take this class!
  9. Nelson = dynamite! She's incredibly intelligent and knowledgeable, and, even better, she's full of energy and wit. Her enthusiasm, passion, and humor are contagious. She's also fantastic at making a big lecture feel small by initiating discussion and soliciting our opinions. The downside to all this is that it's a hard course. There's a LOT of reading, and though the books received their due, the articles were glossed over a lot of the time. But skipping the reading isn't an option, as a working knowledge of all of it is needed to prepare for the midterm and final, which were both quite tough. All in all, though, this is a fantastic course taught by a great professor. Take it if you're willing to work hard and the material appeals to you -- you'll have fun!
