Evaluation Comments for Nelson M

  1. I'm in the middle of the semester and I just need to put it out there that this class is changing the way I see myself and the students around me. Nelson provokes ideas about the real motivations behind why we seek (or don't seek) education, what it does for people, and who gets opportunities to succeed. If you do the reading and pay any sort of attention in this class, you will be so glad you did. Nelson is a hilarious lady and an easy-going but devoted teacher. Favorite class at Midd

  5. she has no problem imparting her opinions
  6. This is a very interesting class, although it gets repetitive. Nelson is a great professor and constantly reviews the material to make sure you know it. Lectures are pretty interesting. Workload is an average amount of reading (which she summarizes during lecture), 4 short response papers (graded with checks), 2 5-page papers (she grades kinda tough on these ones), a midterm, and a final
  7. FAVORITE CLASS AT MIDD! Nelson is SO amazing, she's funny, engaging, but really smart. I learned SO much from her and from the class discussions. I didn't do all the reading but I would advise you to at least skim it so you have an overview for discussion. Reading beforehand really really helps. Such a great course - take it!
  8. Nelson is funny and engaging. There's a LOT of reading (and she expects you to know it and be able to utilize the theories). If you don't do the reading, it's hard to keep up with the class. The material can be a little too theoretical, which I guess is just a characteristic of sociology at large, but it can be frustrating at times. Overall, though, it was interesting and provided a good framework for dissecting many of the processes that underly inequalities in education and the reproduction of social inequalities over the generations through education.
  9. This class was an interesting look at the U.S. Education system and the inequalities within it. Professor Nelson is a good teacher, but the lectures are long, and by the end they get pretty boring. Some of the readings are very interesting, and some of them less so, but it is possible to do well in this class without doing the reading. Mostly, the lectures are a recap of the reading, and an in depth discussion of the educational theory behind it. There are only two 3-5 page papers, as well as 4 reading responses throughout the course of the semester. There is also a midterm and a final, which are based more on class discussion and lectures than the readings themselves. In general, this was a good class, though not necessarily the best I've taken, and it does open your mind up to a set of problems facing students in different parts of the U.S.'s educational system.
  10. stay away
  11. This course gave me a better understanding of factors within schools and society that influence the reason some students perform better in school than others. I found the subject very interesting. There were lots of readings, but I liked most all of them so they were not painful to do. Professor Nelson facilitates great discussions and her lectures were lively and easy to follow. There was a fair amount of writing, but it was not difficult to do.
  12. Lots of reading, though you don't have to do all of it because Professor Nelson summarizese everything during lecture. The material is repetitive, and paper-writing was long and tedious. But, in the end, I think it's worth it for how much you get out of the work. It definitely changes your perspective on the US education system.
  13. This was one of my favorite classes. A lot of reading, but almost all of it was very interesting. I plan to become a teacher, and this class both helped explain the sociological dynamics underlying experiences I've already had in the classroom and gave me a lot that I'll keep thinking about when I start teaching. If you take it for CW credit, Prof. Nelson is a pretty critical grader, but it's helpful. Discussions were really fun, and Professor Nelson is always hilarious.
  14. The material got very repetitive, though some of it was interesting. I'm not a fan of Professor Nelson's teaching style. At times the class felt disorganized because readings came from 15+ sources and we would skip around chapter, pages, etc. Not a hard class though.
