Evaluation Comments for Nelson M

  1. I highly recommend taking this class considering we are amidst our own experience of higher education. We read some very interesting books, although I thought more issues could have been covered. The class is discussion-based with 8-9 detailed written response papers, one position paper, and a final essay exam. You read about a book a week; it's intense. But Professor Nelson knows her stuff and is very good at getting the class to probe in deep discussion. She's one of my favorite profs at our school.
  2. It is a demanding course, as people have already said. I think Professor Nelson is okay, but I don't know if I'd take another course from her. She seems to have her own agendas in the class, so you end up learning whatever she thinks about the topics. THe books we read were really interesting and it's valuable to get an inside scoop on what's going on in higher education.
  3. Interesting material, but beware: you'll have to read an entire book and write a paper on it every week. The discussions are interesting and mostly student-based; Nelson rarely lectured. The final paper is made up of 3 average-sized papers, so that is a lot of work and not a lot of fun. If you're interested in education or social issues, it is a worthwhile course.
