Evaluation Comments for Leng

  1. Professor Leng is great--take this class with him if you can! The class is really well organized, and his lectures are easy to follow. Discussions usually applied whatever theoretical stuff we had learned to current events, which I found to be really interesting. Even the paper topics were enjoyable!
  2. He may seem intimidating at first, but he is a nice guy, with a great sense of humor. Not that much work for this class - midterm, a short paper (1500 words max) + final. If you work hard, you will get excellent grades.
  3. Leng is the man. Seriously, if you are a polysci major or even just like international news and affairs, take this class. Everything you learn will relate to the front page of the New York Times and Leng is a great professor. Lectures present dry material but surprisingly, they were not boring. Leng is a good lecturer, and in discussions, even though he will ask you questions if you don't speak or follow-up questions if you do, it helps you really learn the material. I feel like this class ties nicely not only with current news, but also other courses in polysci and history...really applicable. Good job Leng.
  4. Do the readings when they are assigned!
  5. Prof. Leng is cool, but kind of a hard grader. The class is very interesting if you love politics, though. Some of the readings were pretty dense, but really not all that bad compared to most poli sci essays. Be prepared to say something bright during discussion.
  6. Leng retired at the end of Spring 2006, gave a heartwarming goodbye speech, almost teared up at his standing ovation. The kind of guy you would love to bump into in 10 years. Before his final class, he sent a class-wide email that read: "I am leaving my entire collection of books outside of my office. For anyone that is interested, please help yourself to them. Just give them a good home-- they are old friends". Just beautiful.
  7. New students: Takes a while to adjust to the reading...seems like sludge. But it's not so bad after you get used to it. Interesting topics if you can bear the reading.
  8. Leng is a good lecturer.??Both the lectures and discussions went by quickly and were quite interesting.??He covers a wide breath of material.??So, there is something for everyone.??This is a must for anyone interested in international affairs and really all Middlebury students
  9. Not a horrible class if you're into poly sci. I thought I was interested, but I realized that it just wasn't my thing. Leng isn't bad either, just a bit boring, but it might not be his fault since it was an intro course.
  10. Great course, great professor and fascinating material!
  11. Initially lectures were so boring and unengaging, but the material became more interesting. Too much time in the class is spent of the history of international relations, when I am much more interested in what has happened in the second half of the century. The present-day issues such as economic globalization and labor and environmental issues are much more engaging for me. This person also suggested: Take the first 3/4 of the class and condense it into 1/4 of the time, then spend the remaining time on issues that are more relevant to international relations today. Liven up the lectures somehow--even when I was getting enough sleep, I still nodded off in this class.
  12. Prof. Leng is the easier of the two who offer the course. He said "you are not required to be @the lectures, however you are graded upon discussion performance. I did not put in the right amount of effort for this class, if I had I would have done better. His exams focus on current events and relating them to what you have learned in the class.
  13. This was one of the best classes I have ever taken. I?ve always had an interest in International Politics and Professor Leng made me passionate about the subject. He outlines the lecture on the board so that it is easy to follow. Even though he seems a bit intimidating at first, it?s worth while getting to know Professor Leng outside the classroom. I would recommend this class to anyone.
  14. PS201 is by far one of the best classes I have taken at Midd. The material is fascinating. Everyone should have a background in international politics it is so important in our increasingly interconnected world. Leng is incredibly smart, usually intersting, provides great examples from current events, and is a really nice, fair man if you get to know him. It was hard but you know what he expects from you, I learned so much and understand and can discuss current events much more clearly now. Take this class.
