  5. Because Professor Morrison's lectures are so good and in depth, some people didn't do a lot of the readings and felt that they still had a good grasp on all of the material. I did do all the readings, and while this made some of the lectures repetitive, I felt that it added a lot to my ability to participate during discussion and helped with the final exam. Professor Morrison is great - funny, helpful, receptive to student feedback, and incredibly smart. The course was well organized and offered both good breadth and depth on the subject. Great class!
  6. In sum, Prof. Morrison rocks. This is the first course I've taken with him, and I hope to take many more with him in the future. Everything people have said above is true. Some of the readings, political theories etc. are somewhat dry, but he presents the material very clearly in class and his enthusiasm for the subject counterbalances the dryness. He really tries to engage everyone in the class, and he's one of the first professors at Middlebury who I felt really tried to get to know me in the classroom. His expectations for the course and the assignments are very clear, and he grades fairly. He was always available for help. He's a relatively new/young professor, but probably one of the best at Middlebury - definitely one of my favorites.
  7. James Morrison is the reason why I am now a political science major. As mentioned by others, he is funny, refreshing and really smart. Never mind how obscure and windy your comment, he'll understand what's going on in your mind and he will make something out of it. He shows a GREAT deal of positive energy during his lectures and they are consequently very engaging. It's been a real pleasure to discover international politics with him. Don't let rumors or hearsay scare you; if you have the chance, take a class with him!
  8. James Morrison is new to the PSCI department, but is has his act together for being new. As long as you get everything in on time, talk in discussion, and pay attention in class, you should be fine.
  9. Awesome class, awesome professor. Morrison is engaging, brilliant, funny, and fair. two papers and a final paper (no final test). Decently tough grader but do the reading and meet with him and youll be totally fine. i HIGHLY recommend taking this class.
  10. Solid. That's this class, and professor, summed up in one word. While Morrison did not make me go "OMG he is amazing," it's worth noting that he seems to have no real flaws as a teacher. He is organized, funny, knowledgeable, and a fair grader. He doesn't blow you away, but like I said, he's solid. Nobody seemed to have anything bad to say about him. The class itself can be interesting or boring, depending on the unit. For me, I liked the theories but disliked the IPE unit. No big deal, since the two essays and essay based finals basically let me choose which units to focus on. Chill. And on that note, he doesn't expect you to do all, or even most of the readings. And his lectures were comprehensive enough that I did about 20% of the readings and still pulled an A. Also, his slides are very organized (and posted online), so you don't really have to go to class. Don't turn stuff in late though, you will be penalized. Overall, if you're doing PSCI or IPE you have to take either International Politics or Comparative. Comparative is overall supposed to be far less interesting, and aside from Mecham, has less than stellar professors (supposedly). So you might as well take International Politics, and Morrison seems to be the best guy to take it from.
  11. JAM is a GREAT addition to the department. He shows a huge deal of energy and enthusiasm, and his intelligence never gets in the way of his teaching. I would recommend taking at least one class with him because I think he is very much unlike everyone else in the department. Yep, really one of a kind!
  12. a very well organized class. most of the readings weren't necessary, but the papers are very hard!
  13. Morrison makes this class enjoyable. He knows what he is talking about and has a good way with interpreting participant's comment in order to make sense with the discussion. He is kind of a harsh grader and a stickler for deadlines, but he is down to earth and puts effort into his teaching. Not to mention, a funny guy. I recommend PSCI majors to take this course.
